This incredibly rare Al Mar Commemorative Set set belongs to a friend of mine. He has decided that at this point in his life he wants to part with it.
I will not attempt to tell you the story of Col Rowe who was a Vietnam POW And True American Hero, who later died in service to our country, or why Al chose to develop this commemorative set.
What I will tell you is what I know about these sets and what I don't know.
First, those that were close to Al and Ann Mar and the company had seen the prototype of this set before Al's death in 1992, and knew this limited edition product was coming.
After Ann got back to business, she shipped as many as she had components to make. When I talked with her about my personal serial number # 46, she was not sure she had enough to make it to my number. I told her I would take any number someone turned down. That is how I ended up with this set that is for sale at serial # 20. I did eventually get my #46 set which resides safely in my safe. My assumption all these years was that perhaps only 50 or 60 of these sets existed. In talking with a well versed Al Mar collector, he seemed to believe the number might be up to the low 100's.
Either way, from 50ish to 120ish, they are extremely rare. They contain the engraved Combat Knife, Book, Challenge Coin, Unit Patches, and Insignia relevant to Col. Rowe's Career.
This set is Authentic. I know it is, because I received it directly from Al Mar Knife Company as described and sold it to my friend back around 1993.
It is however, pristine, with the following exceptions:
- We unrolled the Certificate to get the serial number and carefully re-rolled it. The ribbon is original and the bow never untied.
- The book is a little Dog Eared because my friend took it out and read it.
- The glue has come loose on the challenge coin and needs to be re-affixed to the velvet liner.
- We do NOT have the original Box, which was actually only a cardboard sleeve.
